Portrait of Zuriya Wang

Zuriya Wang

Zuriya Wang is a designer based between London and China, developing design research practices at the intersection of ecological design, multispecies design, product design and biodesign.

She trained at Central Saint Martins and later completed postgraduate study in Curating Contemporary Design at Kingston University, in partnership with the Design Museum, with additional study in circular economy through TU Delft. Before developing Steppe, she worked for over a decade across brand, packaging, product and interior design, developing projects from concept to production.

Steppe grows from Zuriya’s lifelong engagement with living systems, beginning in childhood through designing, making and maintaining small aquatic, reptile and invertebrate habitats. It is shaped by Daoist philosophy and East Asian animistic understandings of human–nature relations, deepened through field study into Mongolian nomadic lifeways, and grounded in everyday life with her daughter and companion animals.

Family Team behind Steppe

Gwen Wang

Gwen is Zuriya’s daughter and creative collaborator. Her questions, observations and hands-on involvement have shaped the project from its early development, including design proposition, material experiments, prototyping and the character design of Loomyco.

Dian

Dian is the family’s adopted turtle. Living beside Zuriya’s desk, she has become a quiet daily presence — and occasional supervisor — in the development of Steppe.

Gwen and Dian
Gwen and Dian, whose questions, care routines and daily presence have shaped Steppe from within the home.
